“Man-boobs or moobs” in pop culture or scientifically identified as gynecomastia, appear in men during puberty or adolescent years. In some cases, it resolves on its own however some continues to appear larger. Gynecomastia is a hormonal imbalance that causes more production of estrogens (female hormone) rather than the androgens (male hormone). There are times that hormone production can fluctuate thus resulting into this condition. As common as it sounds, this condition sometimes can cause harm rather than good. Harm in a way that the person having this condition lacks confidence and causing embarrassment and having intimacy issues due to the fact that they do not want their partners to know of their condition. Others are afraid that symptoms of an enlarged breast in men are cause by breast cancer.

Male breast reduction surgery is the most widespread and popular procedure to remove excess fat from the male tissues and flattens skin resulting into an improve shape of the chest. How it is done is similar to liposuction or fat removal surgery. This is becoming more prevalent as more men are likely to be conscious of their man boobs or “moobs.” The procedure is considered as out-patient and recovery period would normally take 2-3 days depending on the case and anyone who has undergone the surgery can return to their daily activities such as driving and going back to work but are exempted to those that require extreme physical exhaustion such as weightlifting, etc. The procedure takes only about 1-2 hours and cost varies depending on the issue.

Based on reports, most Male breast reduction surgery is successful. In fact, it is the fifth most popular aesthetic surgery done in the world. About 80% of them are satisfied with the procedure. Other benefits brought by this procedure is that men gain and boost their self-confidence especially when wearing tight-fitting shirt, going to the gym or swimming without having to worry about small breasts sticking out of their chest. While they may have suffered for long years trying to hide their condition by wearing multiple layers of clothing or avoiding swimming or going to the gym.

While some of you may be interested with these procedures, first question that one would come to mind is the cost and if it is covered by your insurance – on the average, this procedure is not covered but that depends on the insurance company and also your case as insurance covers are uniquely designed to fit your needs. If you have money to spend, procedure ranges from $3,000.00 to $3,900.00 but that is still a case to case basis.

I may not be a surgeon or an expert when it comes to breast reduction surgery, or any surgery for that matter, but in my personal opinion, I don’t have anything against aesthetic or enhancement surgery. It is a matter of how people have the desire to feel and look good manly because of self-satisfaction and the drive to conform to social norms.
